Among the slider designed phones from Samsung, the Z400 is the first handset to feature 3G technology and Direct Connect features. The phone is similar in appearance to the Samsung D500, only thinner and heavier. The Samsung Z400 is promising to be one of the more reliable, functional, and easy to use handsets in its lineup.

The Samsung Z400 is ruggedly designed to rival its competitors Nextel and Motorola. The handset is both sturdy and practical. Rubber sidings’ on the phone are solidly built the phone sits comfortably in the hand. The handset has a dark blue theme with black highlights on the side. Phone is surprisingly light weighing in at a mere 3.5 ounces.

The external display is a little small but shows important information like time, battery life and signal strength. Front display is monochrome but simple functions include a viewfinder option. Speakers and the camera are located just above the external display. A Flash LED feature is not available on this phone. External controls are just like Nextel phones. On the left spine, you will find the volume rocker, a 2.5 headset jack and PTT button. On the right spine, you will find the camera shutter and the charger port.

The internal display measures 1.9 inches and supports 262,000 colors. Image resolutions through the internal display are great. The menu is very responsive and viewing messages is easy on the eyes. Screen toggling settings include brightness controls, backlight time, font size adjustments for text and phone menus.

Keys are nicely spaced and tactile. Feedback is great with clicking sounds confirming every key input. The four way toggle can be programmed as application or function shortcuts. The keypad buttons have large numbers and equipped with a bright backlighting for better contrast.

You can store 600 contacts in this phone each with six phone numbers, an email address, Internet Message ID, Web Address, nickname and notes. You can assign a contact to a group, photo for caller ID and personal ringtone for easier recognition. Basic features include calculator, world clock, memo pad, calendar, alarm clock, SMS, MMS, and a vibrate mode.

The 1.3 megapixel camera gives satisfactory pictures. You can capture images in four resolutions and three quality settings. The phone has no Flash LED but there are six fun frames, multi-shot mode, self timer, five color tones and shutter sounds. Camera also functions as a camcorder and setting for videos are similar to image capture.

Screensavers, color themes, clock styles, and greetings can be used to give the user a more personalized phone experience. You can download more through the wireless Web browser feature. There are also several demo and trial applications installed and you will have the buy the full version if you want to maximize them.

The Z400 also comes with Bluetooth, voice dialing, USB mass storage, speakerphone, GPS, PC syncing, and voice recorder. Phone also permits email messaging through different email clients. Advance options include simultaneous communications for 20 people through Group Connect.

Call quality was sharp and clear. Noise and interference were noted but minimal. On the other end of the line, the voice was just fine and audible. The speakerphone was impressive on this phone, audios were clear and loud. Talk time was rated at hours before charging.

Overall impression for the Samsung Z400 is excellent. The phone showed its strength in being both durable and functional. Although the design could have been much better, it does not look unattractive either. Like other Nextel phones it serves its purpose. However, the external display is just too small and the e-mail and instant messaging are not that responsive. For those looking for a dependable phone for business or outdoor communication the Samsung Z400 is highly recommended.
