Have you ever seen a semi-QWERTY keyboard phone? Well, there are two of them. Aside from the BlackBerry Pearl's SureType, the Samsung SGH-T349 has the same type of keyboard.

The Samsung SGH-T349's design is very simple yet elegant. It has a candy bar design with round corners. It is slim and lightweight weighing only 3.2 ounces. It has a very attractive color design with a lime color tone on the sides and on the navigation toggle. Pearl gray dominates the main body. It feels comfortable when held and feels solid.

The 2.2-inch display supports 262,000 colors. The screen is bright and displays sharp and colorful graphics. The backlight time, themes, font size can be changed. The menu interface can also be adjusted from the traditional grid view into a circular manner.

The navigation array is very easy to use. It has a four-way navigation toggle with a center OK button, two soft keys, a Send and End/Power buttons. There is also a key for messaging applications on the left and a Back key on the right. You can set the four-way navigation toggles as a shortcut for call history, audio postcard, contacts list, and composing new messages.

The keyboard which is a partial QWERTY or 20-key keyboard is somehow a little difficult to use. However, with long term use, you will be able to get use to it. The keypad buttons however are separated from each other and tactile.

A camera button can be found on the right spine of the phone as well as the charger jack. On the left spine, you will find the volume rocker and a very convenient location of the microSD card that you can expand up to 4 GB. At the rear face of the phone is the camera lens. This phone is not built with a self-portrait mirror or flash.

Though it has a partial QWERTY keyboard, it is not a smartphone. It is a basic phone with basic features. The phone book can hold up to 1,000 contacts, each with five phone numbers, and an e-mail address. You can assign a contact to a group, a photo for caller ID, and a polyphonic ringtone. Unlike other cell phones, you can use voice recordings as a ringtone as well as MP3s. Other basic features include: a vibrate mode, text and MMS, speakerphone, calendar, voice recorder, world time, tip calculator, notepad, to-do list, unit converter, timer, stopwatch and calculator. The Audio Postcard feature can make you send an image with a voice message. Instant messaging, mobile Wed e-mail and stereo Bluetooth are the additional features beyond the basics.

For multimedia, the Samsung SGH-T349 comes with a generic music player. It can support not only MP3 files but ACC and MIDI files as well. You can also play videos under the MPEG-4, H.263, and 3GP formats.

The 1.3 megapixel camera can capture images in six different resolutions. Other editing options include: nine color effects, five white balance settings, self-timer, 4x zoom, multishot and mosaic mode. The photo quality is great but not that great. The colors are vibrant but not very sharp. You can also record in three different resolutions and editing options are the same as the still camera.

The wallpapers, sounds and graphics can be adjusted. You can download more options through the wireless Web browser. There are few demo games installed. You will have to buy the full version for extended play.

The Samsung SGH??”T349 is a tri-band phone. It does not have 3G but the call quality is good. The volume was just alright and the voices sounds a little distorted but it is barely noticeable. On the other end of the line, the voice quality sounds good. Speakerphone is also fairly good and volume loud enough to be heard. With Bluetooth headset, the audio quality is not that impressive and volume is somewhat weak. You can have a talk time up to 7 hours which is economical for energy usage and a less than 2 weeks standby time.

Overall, the Samsung SGH-T349 has a great design but with a partial QWERTY keyboard, some might not like it. Color theme is simple and elegant. Call quality is also good but this phone has no 3G feature. It is good basic phone for messaging and calls.
