AT&T Samsung Rugby Yellow
Samsung Rugby Yellow Review
For outdoor professionals
or people who need a phone that can take a beating the Samsung Rugby
SGH a837 is definitely for you. The Rugby is a rock solid design which
comes with great features such as 3G support and GPS capability. Multimedia
experience does not suffer and the phone comes with all the multimedia
goodies such as music player and video.
The Samsung Rugby SGH
a837 was designed to function even in the most extreme conditions and
the phone certainly exceeds all expectations. Designed as a workhorse,
the Rugby is able to resist shock, extreme environment, difficult working
conditions, and bone jarring vibrations. Simple and rugged in construction,
the Samsung Rugby comes in a clamshell design. The phones appeal comes
in its rugged and sturdy construction. Display is clear and bright and
a set of wide spaced keys provide excellent support for text and online
messaging.
Messaging features
are basic and for phones designed for keeping in touch with your workforce
is just not good enough. It could have done better by offering toggling
features for email messaging. The phones lack of support for Gmail service
is also one area that drags it down.
Call quality was good
and noise was kept to minimum even at less than ideal conditions. Speaker
quality was good but ideally should have been louder especially for
noisy work environments which the phone was designed for. The phone
exhibited excellent reception even at hard to reach areas. Battery life
was tested at 5 hours continuous talk with applications running. This
is respectable as the phone was run through HSDPA networks. The Rugby
comes short however with phonebook contacts and detail. This could prove
invaluable persons in the field who use the phone extensively for exchanging
information.
Multimedia features
for a phone designed as a workhorse are surprisingly good. The Samsung
Rugby’s user interface however makes access to this applications a
bit cumbersome. The multimedia functions are deeply imbedded in the
phones menus and 2 or 3 clicks are needed just to access them. The music
player can be accessed by clicking the “My Stuff” menu and opening
the Entertainment folder. Interface could have been made simple by offering
quick launch icons for multimedia features. The Samsung Rugby comes
with a 1.3 shooter. Image quality was poor bordering on blurry. Again,
the phone is a rugged unit and multimedia applications such as image
capture do not come high in its priorities.
Listening experience
could also been improved by using other than provided headsets. The
Rugby does not come with a headset port and choices for headsets are
limited to those products offered by Samsung. The Rugby’s small front
display made viewing music tracks both simple and fun.
Web browsing on the
Samsung Rugby was good. Surfing online was made possible by an Access
Netfront browser which was efficient in loading picture rich content.
Download times however was not lightning quick but end results justified
it. The Rugby was not designed as a smartphone but more of a rugged
tool for jobsite communication. It was surprising that the Rugby produced
better than expected results in online services.
For people on the go,
especially those who spend most of their communications in the field,
the Samsung Rugby is one of the cellphones that can suit your special
needs. Ruggedly built to survive even under the harsh environments of
field work, the Samsung Rugby is one serious phone that works as hard
as their users.
