Sprint Samsung Exclaim - BlueBerry
Samsung Exclaim - BlueBerry Review
Samsung continues to
provide more exciting and innovative phones which have converted may
users to their side. The Samsung Exclaim SPH-M550 is a handsome
phone which comes in a radical dual-slider shape. It may not be
the first one to use the dual-slider phone feature but it has gained
wide attention. The shape provides the user with a choice of using
the alphanumeric keypad or QWERTY keyboard for easier navigation and
texting.
The dual-slider Exclaim
is somewhat large but still small enough to fit in your pocket.
Quality and build is solid but a bit heavy. The phone comes in two candy
colors, raspberry (red) and blueberry (blue).
The Samsung Exclaim
maybe a bit wide but it uses the available real estate efficiently.
Display comes with a big 2.6-inch screen. Phone display and viewing
is at 262,000 colors which were vibrant and bright. Photos and
graphics were amazingly crisp and sharp. Brightness levels and
backlight timer could be adjusted according to taste. The menu
interface is responsive and user friendly. The Exclaim makes quick
work of navigating the phones different applications by adding some
shortcut keys. Viewing images can however be difficult as the phone
displays small fonts and icons.
Samsung Exclaim design
and structure is solid with good navigation controls. Navigating
options include the four way toggle, OK button at the center, two soft
keys, Back Key, shortcut for speakerphone, and the Talk and End/power
button. Other controls are raised except for the soft keys and the calling
buttons. When the Exclaim is slide up, the alphanumeric keypad
is displayed. Keys are flat but ridges surrounding the buttons
give it a tactile feel for easy dialing. Aside from this, the
key spacing is spacious, large and bright backlights which make typing
at dark conditions easy.
You can compose your
text messages with the keypad but most people today would like to maximize
the QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard is accessed when the phone is
turned to the left side and slid up. It has a very spacious design which
is really nice. It feels comfortable and it makes typing easy
and accurately. The alphabetic keys, numbers, and symbols share
the space which is similar to other messaging handsets. Landscape view
is enabled when the phone is placed to its side and when using the QWERTY
keypad.
Conveniently located
at the left side of the phone is the volume rocker. It is can
easily be accessed and located during phone conversations. At the right
side, you can locate the microSD slot, the camera shutter, and the micro
USB port. The headset port is only 2.5 mm wide which is not compatible
with the popular 3.5 mm headsets on Walkman phones. Adapters are
needed if you want to use the 3.5 mm headsets. The camera and the self-portrait
mirror can be located at the back panel of the phone.
The Samsung Exclaim
gives you the option to store over 600 contacts with six phone number
entries, e-mail address, IM (instant messaging) ID, URL, and notes.
Caller ID can be paired with a photo and a polyphonic ringtone.
Standard features include texting and multimedia messaging support,
calculator, calendar, alarm clock, world clock, tip calculator, speakerphone,
memo pad, stopwatch and speakerphone. In addition, the Exclaim
offer Bluetooth with a stereo profile, voice dialing and commands, a
voice memo recorder, IM (instant messaging), USB transfer and MSS storage.
Advanced options include
integrated online applications such as the MySpace, NFL Mobile Live,
Nascar, Facebook, Google maps, and YouTube. You can also add documents,
news, and photos with Google services. The Exclaim also comes
with application manager and simple multitasking that makes it easy
to run applications in the background.
A wide range of multimedia
files could be played. The Samsung Explain can play music in MP3, AAC,
AAC+, and WMA formats. MP3 files however could not be used as
ringtones.
The 2-megapixel camera
comes in five different resolutions and three quality settings.
There is also the self-timer function, 3x zoom, multishot, five color
tones, five white-balance settings, shutter sounds and silent option,
spot metering, and night mode. The editing options are the same with
the camcorder. MMS clips are 10 seconds long but video recording
with the camcorder feature is longer and depends on available memory
space.
The Samsung Exclaim
also comes with great connectivity features. Share videos and pictures,
upload them, send them via Bluetooth or MMS, and using a printer through
the PictBridge application. Advance options include, uploading photos
and video clips directly to Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, MySpace, and
Photobucket. However, it only has 586 MB shared memory so you
cannot store that much unless you expand the microSD card which can
handle up to 8 GB. The phone when first bought though only comes
with a 512 MB card.
Screensavers and alert
sounds can be customized or personalized. You can download additional
ringtones and other options via the WAP 2.0 Web browser. The phone
comes with great demo games. Buying the full versions is required for
extended play.
The Samsung Exclaim
only comes with dual band, so more or less it will not work on other
countries. The call quality is not that impressive but it is good
enough for normal conversations. Voice quality could be improved by
increasing phone volume.
The Samsung Exclaim
is a great addition to the long line of Samsung products in the market.
It represents a fresh look for Samsung models. The dual slide form is
not new but the addition of some good features makes it both attractive
and functional. The only major shortcoming is that the phone comes in
dual band and may not be available for use in all countries. Before
purchasing this phone it is important that you check if the phone is
supported by your local provider.
