Nokia recently introduced the E71x, a slim QWERTY phone in its smartphone line up. The phone is basically the same with the Nokia E71. The main difference being the x series has an upgraded operating system and new features to boot.

For business users who are searching for a great looking smartphone packed with loads of multimedia features the Nokia E71x is one phone that demands a serious look. Technical improvements include the Symbian S60 Feature Pack 2. The E71x does not feature a touchscreen interface but navigation through the various menus and applications is easy with simple taps of a button.

Like the Nokia E71 the x series comes in a slim and light design. Phone color is an unpretentious black and overall phone quality is solid with metal inserts for a sturdier feel. A business like interface is present with the x series. Options like switching from business mode to a more relaxed interface are not available for this model.

The Nokia E71x was designed for business minded users and this was not lost in its messaging features. The QWERTY keyboard provides an excellent method of input for messages. MMS and SMS messaging was a breeze as network support was great and fast. An Oz instant messaging application enables the phone to communicate with mobile email services from Yahoo, AOL and MSN. Chat with your friends online with the E71x’s friendly user interface that makes you feel like you’re infront of your PC.

Multimedia experience was better than average and is a welcome addition to an otherwise boring business phone. The multimedia feature was second only to N series phones from Nokia. Multimedia functions were significantly better than older E71’s. Menus and functions were quicker to access from the menu and a short navigation made them available. Music quality was great and music tracks were easy to access. Viewing experience was smooth, a little twitching was required as videos must be converted to fit the phones 320 x 240 QVGA display.

Nokia’s mini map Web Browser was good delivering a smooth surfing experience. Loading times were minimal and navigation was easy with the phones 4-way button. Second only to the iPhones Safari browser the phones HTML browser provided clear and clean webpage display.

The Nokia E71x comes with a 3 megapixel camera which provides decent images. Picture quality leaves much to be desired as more was expected from a 3 megapixel shooter. Autofocus if present was visibly not present on the pictures captured.

The Phone supports GPS and appears to do a good job with this. A Nokia Maps application comes standard with the phone. Other GPS applications such as those from AT&T which were more user friendly could also be uploaded. The phones GPS function was on the money as it followed every corner made and was accurate with every location.

The nokia has a rated talk time of 5 hours and standby time of 2 weeks. Tests showed better than rated talk times of 8 hours with continued use. Overall impression of the phone was impressive. The Nokia E71x was designed for business communications and delivered on its promise. Multimedia features are robust but seemed lacking only in comparisson to Nokia’s N series phones.
