Mobile phones were primarily made for calling only. Unlike today, mobile phones are used most of the time for messaging and Nokia went back to the basics for Nokia 1661. The Nokia 1661 has a candy bar design with soft round corners. It comes lightweight and slim. Covered with a gray and black color theme with maroon highlights on the edges.

The display measures only 1.8 which is considerably small for its size. It also has a low resolution supporting only 65,000 colors. The backlight time can be changed and menu interface is quite responsive. You can change the menu from list to grid style.

The navigation array is not that impressive. There is a four-way toggle but there is no middle key that serves as an OK button. Instead, you will have to use the left soft key which is a little bit of an inconvenience. In addition, you cannot set the toggle as a shortcut for user-defined functions. The soft keys are raised above the surface but they are a little bit small compared to the toggle. The right key can be set as a shortcut key for quick access to your favorite application. There is no Back button which could have been very useful. The Talk and End/Power keys are also flushed for easy use. Keypad buttons are hard to use, keys are a bit slippery and flat.

Located at the right side of the phone is a 2.5 mm headset jack and charger port. The size of the headset jack does not really matter since this phone was n ot built for music listening. Another incovenience is the phone lack of a volume rocker which could be useful for quickly adjusting volumes during calls.

Phone book capacity holds 500 contacts. Each contact can have five phone numbers. You can only assign a cartoon image or group and nothing more. Other basic features include: a vibrate mode, text and MMS, calculator, unit and currency converter, budget spreadsheet, calendar, countdown timer, stopwatch, and alarm clock. This phone however comes with a flashlight and an FM radio.

Themes, colors, screensavers, messages and alert tones can be customized for a more personal feel. Since it does not have wireless Web access, you will not be able to download more options and games.

The Nokia 1661's call quality is not that impressive. The phone is not affected by interferences but there is a slight hissing sound during calls. Volume level was also quite low. On the other end of the line, call quality is alright but when it comes to talking in a noisy environment, you will have to talk louder to be understood. The speakerphone is also good but not that great. Talk time is rated at 4 hours and standby time is 3 weeks before battery needs recharging.

Overall, the Nokia 1661 is a good basic phone with an easy-to-use interface. However, the keypad and navigation array is poorly designed. Considering that it is built mainly for communication, call quality is disappointing.
