Motorola Renegade V950 Review

If you want a phone that offers a rugged design and high-end phone functionality, then the Motorola Renegade V950 is one serious contender. Passing strict military specifications the phone is able to stand a fair amount of beating.

Blending a sleek design with hardy construction, don’t be fooled by the phone’s RAZOR appearance. This Razor comes with armor; rubber embraces the handset protecting it from stress and the environment. It is solid to the touch but comes surprisingly light at 5 ounces.

The external display measures 1.5 inches supporting 65,536 colors. Screen displays date, time, battery life, signal strength, and photo caller ID. However, it does not serve as a viewfinder for the camera. On top of the display are the camera lens and the flash. Front display settings include screensaver, backlight time and clock.

Just below the display are controls for the music player. This makes the music player accessible without having the need to open the phone. Speaker controls are located at the center. On the left spine, you will find the volume rocker and push-to-talk (PTT) button. Speakerphone control and recent-calls button are located at the top of the spine. Located at the phones right are the microUSB charger port and the 2.55mm headset jack.

A 2 inch internal display which supports 262,000 splashes your eyes. Pictures and images looked sharp and crisp. There are six menu shortcuts on the home screen. User Interface is great with an easy-to-use menu design. Backlight time and font size could be adjusted for text messaging.

Navigation is similar to other RAZOR designs. Keys are spaced nicely and feedback is good with the phones tactile feature. Standard circular four way toggles with the middle key as an OK button comes standard for navigation. There are two soft keys, key for camera, Back key, Talk and End/Power button. Backlight is bright enough to gives good contrast to phone keys allowing good input even at low-light environments.

Phonebook stores up to 600 contacts, each with seven phone numbers, e-mail address, a URL, job title and company, street address, and notes. Contacts can be assigned to a group, a photo for caller ID and a polyphonic ringtone, plus a video ringtone or a voice record. Other basic features includes: text and multimedia messaging, calculator, calendar, notepad, world clock, vibrate mode, an alarm clock voice memo, and stopwatch. Group Connect allows for easy communication for 20 people at the same time and 35 others with TeamDC. Advance features include Internet Messaging and Chat, Bluetooth connectivity, modem capability, voice dialing, and remote backup for contacts.

Add your favorite music tracks through network download and easily store them to your phone and PC. Quickly transfer music via Bluetooth or USB cable. The music interface is very basic but easy-to-use. However, you cannot use MP3s as ringtones. Listening with the popular after market headsets may prove to be a problem with its 2.55 headset port. GPS support and feature are dependent on mobile provider settings. Music quality was very impressive. Music quality sounded clear and speakers did not sound distorted. After market headsets are recommended for enhanced listening experience.

Phone shooter is a 2 megapixel camera which captures images in 5 resolutions. Settings include seven color tones, self-timer, white balance, 3 quality settings, and multi-shot mode. Image quality was quite impressive and performed better to similarly ranged cameras. The camera also functions as a camcorder, shooting videos in 3 resolutions.

Making calls on the Motorola Renegade was a welcome experience. Voices were clear and loud. Reception was above average and network signals registered 2 bars even at difficult to reach areas. The speaker did a handsome job of producing clear and loud audio. Talk time registered 4 hours which was good considering the phones battery size.

The Motorola Renegade comes highly recommended and scores highly both in communication and durability. For people looking for a solid phone for use in less than desirable working conditions, the Motorola Renegade is top of the charts.
