AT&T Motorola Karma
Motorola Karma Review
Motorola comes out
with a new phone which is designed to offer look different from its
usual RAZR sets. The new Motorola Karma QA1 is a slider phone
which supports a QWERTY keypad. It is not the traditional looking
Motorola device but comes to deliver new features as well. It is equipped
to operate at 3G speeds, can display a full HTML browser, and able to
access social networking applications quickly. This promises to
be not just your normal messaging phone but beyond that.
In terms of design,
it almost looks like the Cricket TXTM8. With the rounded corners,
square shaped and black silver colors. But when it comes to size,
the Motorola Karma QA1 is a bit smaller than the Cricker TXTM8.
It has a tempered glass display and a soft touch texture for its back
panel. It weighs barely less than 5 ounces and it seems a lot
sturdier than the TXTM8.
The 2.5-inch display
on the front panel is quite impressive. It can support 262,000
colors and a 240x320 pixel resolution. The screen is quite impressive
displaying vibrant and crisp images and text. The menu interface
is very easy to use making it a very user friendly phone. The
icons are big enough and it has large fonts. The wallpapers, the
screen saver, the skin, greeting text, display themes allows users to
customize their phones. The backlight time and the brightness
however cannot be modified. At the bottom row of the screen is
a launch bar just like what you see on desktop computers. There
are four user-defined shortcut icons leading to applications on the
phone or browser bookmarks. It can be very useful to save you
the tedious access of sites that you often visit like Facebook or MySpace.
The launch bar can be hidden or shown by just simply pressing the keys
on the navigation control.
There are two soft
keys in the navigation array below the display. There is also
a square navigation toggle with an OK key, a key for messaging, a Back
key, and the Send and End/Power buttons on both sides. The center
of the navigation toggle felt slippery and flat. The Send and
End/Power are also thin but usable. At the left part if the phone
is the smart key that can be used for quick access on other phone functions.
The volume rocker is found on the right side and the charger jack is
on the bottom. The headset jack is located on the top part of
the phone. You can use the Walkman headsets because the Motorola
Karma is equipped with aa 3.5 headset jack. When you look at the
back part of the camera, there is the camera and flask LED. Also,
the microSD card slot is located behind the battery cover which gives
a little bit of inconvenience.
The full QWERTY keyboard
is shown when you slide open the phone. It is very convenient
to use because it is not that cramped and it has this nice rubberized
no-slip texture. It is roomy and easy to use because the keys
are raised which is easy to type and dial. The number keys can
easily be located because they are highlighted in blue adding to the
good looking design of the keyboard. There are also keys such
as the Caps Lock or Shift key, browser key and the symbols and punctuation
keys aside from the function and backspace keys.
When you have a lot
of contacts, the Karma can store up to 1000 contacts in the phone book.
With each entry, you can have six phone numbers, three e-mail addresses,
a URL, three postal addresses, notes and birthday. You can also
assign them into categories, a photo caller ID, and a polyphonic ringtone.
Other features available are the basic vibrate mode, text and multimedia
messaging with threaded conversations, speakerphone, calendar, world
clock, an alarm clock, a voice recorder, and a calculator. Latest
incoming texts and messages can be read even while the phone is closed.
You can also access other applications even during calls or surfing
the Wep through the ???Swap??? option.
The full stereo Bluetooth,
voice dialing, IM (AIM, Windows Live, Yahoo), and A-GPS is also a kick-off
in this handset. You can access e-mail through Yahoo, AOL, AIM,
Hotmail and many more through the Karma. But you cannot add a
new e-mail contact in this phone.
Full HTML can be displayed
in the Karma QA1 supporting the phone's 3G speeds. The small screen
size however, you will have to scroll to view large Web pages but you
can zoom in and out of the pages to have a fit-to-screen view of the
page. The browser supports Flash Lite for watching streaming videos
through video streaming sites such as YouTube. It also records
browser history, cookies which can be cleared off, cache that can be
reset, turn on or off the JavaScript and images, and Web page saving.
Social networking such as Facebook and MySpace is available on this
phone. Other social networks such as Twitter and Flickr are available
and you only need to log in once.
The multimedia playback
has a very simple interface. You can repeat, shuffle, create and
edit playlists. There are also the spatial audio and bass boosts
to get a better audio sound. You can play songs while navigating
other applications. You can share your files via Bluetooth, or
download music via Napster or eMusic or from a computer into the microSD
card which can be expanded from 100 MB up to 16BG. Audio formats
supported are MIDI, AAC, MP3, eAAC+, AAC+, RealAudio, and XMF formats.
The camera is a 2-megapixel.
It can capture images in four different resolutions and three quality
settings. It also has five color effects, exposure setting, white
balance/lighting modes with night mode, 8x digital zoom, flash LED,
self-timer, and shutter tones. You ca record videos the same as
the camera options but the videos are not that impressive but enough
to be shared via MMS.
Wallpapers, screensavers,
and alert tones can be personalized and you can download additional
options if you like. Games and applications are already installed
in the Karma QA1 but you can download more through the Web Browser.
The Motorola Karma
QA1 is a quad band world phone. Call quality is very good.
There were only a few static but voices are natural. On the other
end of the call, there was a minimal amount of background noise.
The phone has the Motorola's CrystalTalk noise-canceling feature making
callers hear audios loud and clear. The speakerphone option is
very loud but it sounded a little bit distorted. You can have
a talk time up to 5 hours long and a standby time up to 14 days.
Above all, the Motorola Karma QA1 is a good looking phone with the best
features that you can??™t get from other ordinary messaging phones.
