MOTORAZR?„? VE20 Licorice Review

The Motorola RAZR VE20 is the combination of the K1m and V3m with features from the V9m but comes in a smaller package. Just like the old razors from Motorola, the VE20 makes a difference when you take a look at its sparkly-slim body with a wide and bright display.

The design of the Razr VE20 is as slim as the original Razr V2m but edges are a lot smoother. The phone is an absolute looker with the streamlined double hinged touched with a brushed metal skin finish and scarlet accents. It is very light, weighing at 3.5 ounces and can be easily held in the palm of your hands. However, a little wiggle is felt when the phone is flipped closed.

The external screen has very reflective display that when viewed through direct sunlight can cause some problems. Front screen measures 1.6 inches and supports 65,000 colors. The display however is bright and crisp with onscreen touch controls just like what is on Motorola Razr2 v9m. This provides an easy access to the music player, shortcut menu, and text message inbox. The screen could also be used as a viewfinder for taking self-portraits. Other options includes changing the screen saver, clock type and backlight time.

Another complaint aside from the reflective front screen is that it could easily be smudged with fingerprints. Users might have to wipe clear the external display first before viewing. One other thing as we mentioned earlier was its shiny finish, it??™s a tradeoff between making the phone more attractive but scores badly in function.

The 2.2-inch internal display supports 262,000 colors. Photos and images and text displayed on this screen are bright, crisp and clear. Font size however can only be changed for messaging. Menu interface is organized and responsive but viewing could be a problem with small font sizes. The VE20 has six menu shortcuts that can be navigated through the navigation toggle which makes it very convenient.

The navigation array and keypad buttons looks similar to other Razor phones but is slightly redesigned. There are two soft keys, a dedicated button for the camera, a Back Button, and the usual Talk and End/Power buttons. The navigation toggle is circular with a central button for confirmation. The keypad is not cramped and you can program the toggles and the left soft key for shortcuts on applications. Key layout shows letters slightly above the surface. Feedback is good with the very tactile keys and clearly visible in the dark.

Phonebook stores up to 600 contracts. Each contact contains six phone numbers, email address, Web address, street address, job and company, and notes. You can also assign your contacts to a group; pair them with a photo, or add polyphonic ringtones. In addition to this, you can also pair your contact with a video ringtone or voice record. Other options include: vibrate mode, text and MMS, calculator, calendar, a notepad, a world clock, a voice memo recorder, converters, tip calculator, and stop watch. This handset also features USB mass storage, IM and chat, file manager, speakerphone, stereo Bluetooth, voice dialing, and remote backup for contacts. Email services can be accessed via Yahoo, Hotmail, and AOL clients.

The Music player has an interface similar to those of other Razor phones. You can download music either through the wireless Web browser or through your PC. MP3s however cannot be used for ringtone purposes. You can navigate through the phone or play music simultaneously. Applications are put on hold when a call comes in but automatically resumes after the call has ended. You can use any 3.5mm headset such as those for Walkman phones. Like any Motorola phone, the audio for VE20 is sharp and impressive. This phone also comes equipped with GPS.

The Motorola RAZR VE20??™s camera captures poor quality pictures. Shooter is a 2 megapixel camera which allows you to take images in five resolutions, seven color tones and three quality settings. You can share or transfer pictures via Bluetooth or MMS, or through the USB cable to the PC. Camcorder functions allow you to record videos in three resolutions.

Themes, screen savers, greetings, clock types, and alert tones allow a more personal experience. Themes, games and wallpapers could be downloaded via WAP 2.0 Web browser.

The VE20 is a dual-band phone. Call quality was good, loud and clear for both caller and receiver. A little static was noticed but was barely noticeable. The speakerphone did a decent job but you will have to speak closer to the phone to be understood. Talk time was rated at 4 hours.

Overall, the Motorola RAZR VE20 is a good testament to the RAZOR line which has made Motorola a popular choice for users. The VE20 comes solid in multimedia, call features and is excellent in terms of image and video. For users looking for an upgrade to their RAZORS or those searching for a good multimedia phone the Motorola RAZR VE20 is an excellent choice.
