It seems that Sony Ericsson is struggling very hard to boost its revenue for the next quarter. Besides by launching its high end Xperia X1 with an unusual way on September 15th this year, they’re also rumored to give their users with service that is really close to Nokia’s “Comes with music“. FT, in the same article also said that this Japan-Sweden joint venture company is planning to announce its service before the end of this September.
To date, Sony Ericsson actually has already have its own music service called PlayNow Arena. However, this service is not just what we’re used to call as an “all you can eat” music service. In PlayNow Arena, users must pay about €0.99 for each individual downloads and this is totally different with “Comes with music” which will give its users with an unlimited downloads for one year period by only purchasing one Nokia’s specific handset.
Could that be a PlayNow 2.0 …… ?
FT also mentioned that Sony Ericsson still have a chance to beat Nokia in this battle if only they dare to offer a different policy on music copyright. Nokia’s “Comes with music” current policy is to tie those users’ downloaded tracks to an individual computer and phone. While SE, with its next service, can do better than this by removing such useless limitation like that. In fact, they’ve even done this with its current PlayNow Arena customers. Finally, the best mantra for next SE’s music services should be “download all music in a year for free and treat them all as you like“.
That’s a simple yet fantastic, nobody can refuse that I think. Not even those Nokia’s lovers.
