Today, September 16th, 2008 is must be the happy day for all HTC fans, including me. Not only because we just got Touch HD official phone specifications and detail but also because we also got two new HTC Touch series; HTC Touch 3G and Touch Viva. Both new series are one of HTC strategy to broaden its market share to all smartphone consumers in the world, especially for they who can not afford the price of Touch Diamond or Touch Pro yet.
HTC Touch 3G
Based on my observation on its features and phone specifications, I am really sure if Touch 3G is just another HTC Touch Diamond. But with some differences such as a different processor type, lack of internal storage, lack of auto focus and secondary camera, lack of radio, and lack of VGA screen. See the detail table of that differences below.
| HTC Touch 3G | HTC Touch Diamond |
| Qualcomm® MSM7225™, 528 MHz | Qualcomm® MSM7201A™ 528 MHz |
| No internal storage | 4GB internal storage |
| 96 grams with battery | 110 g (with battery) |
| QVGA resolution (320 × 240 pixels) | VGA resolution (640 × 480 pixels) |
| 3.2MP camera with fixed focus | 3.2MP camera with auto focus |
| quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: | Tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE |
| without VGA CMOS color camera | VGA CMOS color camera |
| no FM radio with RDS | FM radio with RDS |
| with microSD slot | no microSD slot |
Well, judging those specs above, let’s hope that customers will find it at a lower price than the Diamond. But note that other important Touch Diamond features like TouchFLO 3D and HSDPA will still be available. So don’t get worry for some insignificant features unavailability.
HTC Touch Viva
I think this is the series that HTC dubbed itself as the affordable TouchFLO 3D powered handset that may suit well with student pocket. So don’t get angry if you couldn’t get such sophisticated features like the one we used to get from other Touch series. Touch Viva will sport on 2MP camera with fixed focus, quad band network, no HSDPA, no FM radio, and one sad thing to be told; HTC has replaced the hard glass screen with a standard plastic film.
Touch Viva hardware is also pretty funny if we compare it to other Touch series. So if all Touch series devices are powered by Qualcomm processor then Viva will only work with the TI’s OMAP™ 850, 201 MHz processor. But with a suitable price, I am still optimist if Viva will have a chance to boost HTC’s revenue next year. Let’s just hope that HTC will charge this low-end smartphone at $200 to $300.
