Flickr has this cool feature that let’s you search uploaded pictures by the type of camera used – including camera phones. We decided it would be fun to have a little Web 2.0 popularity contest, and see how many photos of people had been taken with certain phones.
The Contestants, in Alphabetical order:
Michael Arrington from TechCrunch
Jason Calacanis from Mahalo
Loren Feldman from 1938 Media
Loic LeMeur from Seesmic
Kevin Rose from Digg
Robert Scoble from Scobelizer
The Rules:
- Only photos taken with a Camera Phone were eligible. We limited searches using Flickr’s search by camera phone function.
- Multiple contestants in the same photo were each given a point.
- The eligible phones for this contest were the iPhone, Nokia N96 and Nokia N73 (Flickr is surprisingly lacking a large number of camera phone designations).
- None of the contestants were informed beforehand – there was no way to game the contest.
The Results:
Over the 3 Phones and Six contestants, there were a total of 340 pictures. Graph #1 shows the total number of pictures taken with all three camera phones and the results.

As we can see from the results, Robert Scoble handily beat everyone. A further look at the numbers shows he had the most amount of pictures as all other contestants combined:
|
Apple iPhone |
Nokia N96 | Nokia N73 | Total | |
| Robert Scoble | 124 | 57 | 2 | 183 |
| Kevin Rose | 36 | 26 | 4 | 66 |
| Michael Arrington | 26 | 16 | 2 | 44 |
| Jason Calacanis | 16 | 6 | 1 | 23 |
| Loic Le Meur | 9 | 9 | 5 | 23 |
| Loren Feldman | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Total | 211 | 115 | 14 | 340 |
Scoble had a combined 183 pictures to the rest of the groups 157!
Don’t let the graph fool you, Loren Feldman actually had 1 picture, not 0:
Results By Phone:
Scoble dominates on the iPhone, Kevin Rose comes in a distant second, and it seems like Loren Feldman has not one friend who owns an iPhone.

Scoble again dominates, Kevin Rose again a distant second, but this time Loren Feldman shows up on the map. Let’s not mention that the only picture of him in the entire contest, was taken by Loic. Loren, aren’t you bullish on mobile?
Finally, the Nokia N73 results show us what we knew already – that this phone is on it’s way out. Loic LeMeur actually wins this round, but overall the N73 isn’t that popular at all.

Overall Observations:
1. Scoble seems to be all over the place, and very photogenic.
2. The iPhone is by far the most popular camera phone right now in Tech (but we all knew that already).
3. Flickr is probably not indicitive of overall success and popularity.
